XPPen and World Illustration Awards 2026 Champion Emerging Creative Talent Worldwide

The XPPen Digital Innovation Cross Category Award, a special award established by XPPen and WIA to celebrate innovative digital illustration, was presented this year to Rotterdam-based illustrator and animator Vanessa Postma for Gowtu, her project in the Exploration category examining identity, heritage, and belonging through symbolism.

The World Illustration Awards, presented by the Association of Illustrators (AOI) in partnership with the Directory of Illustration, is a premier international platform that has championed contemporary illustration since 2015. The 2026 competition drew over 4,000 entries from 85 countries, evaluated by an independent jury of 30 leading professionals across ten major categories including Advertising, Animation, Book Covers, and Children's Publishing.

Gowtu draws on Postma’s Surinamese roots and her personal experience of belonging. The work explores traditional Surinamese jewellery as both a cultural object and a form of visual identity, translating these cultural symbols into a contemporary visual language. Combining diverse digital creative techniques and forms, Postma shapes the work’s visual language and explores new possibilities for contemporary illustration. By blending cultural heritage with contemporary digital artistry, Gowtu sparks conversations around identity and belonging, creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to find recognition, connection, and deeper understanding.

As part of the award, Postma receives the Artist Pro 19 (Gen 2), a professional-grade drawing display equipped with a 4K Ultravision screen and Calman Verified color accuracy for precise, fluid visual rendering. The device also features dual X3 Pro series styli with 16,384 levels of pressure sensitivity, enabling natural, responsive strokes.
